At the gala in Manhattan, I felt my phone begin to vibrate.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
I looked down.
Dad.
Genevieve.
Mom.
Mom again.
I let it ring.
Richard leaned slightly toward me. “Everything all right?”
“Yes,” I said. “Just old business closing itself.”
I answered only after the fifth call, stepping into a quieter hallway where the carpet swallowed the sound of the gala behind me.
The moment the call connected, chaos spilled through the speaker.
My mother’s voice came first, thin and shaking.
“Matilda? Tell me this is a misunderstanding.”
“What part?”
“The article. The company. The money. They are saying you sold something to Northbridge. Arthur is making a scene. His mother is furious. People are staring.”
“There is no misunderstanding,” I said.
A sound broke from her, small and shocked.
“You lied to us.”
